World Meteorological Day: Why Meteorology is Important?

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2023 is "The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations," highlighting the necessity of understanding how the climate, weather, and water systems interact and change over time. It also highlights the importance of addressing these changes to secure a sustainable future for future generations.

Since 1950, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology of Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation has observed World Meteorological Day on March 23. This day is celebrated worldwide to remember the foundation of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950, an intergovernmental body specializing in delivering meteorological, climate, and water information and services.

Climate Change

Climate change is a worldwide concern with far-reaching consequences for natural habitats, ecosystems, and human cultures. Nepal is a country that is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, and the results are already being felt throughout the country. The following are some of the critical effects of climate change in Nepal:

  • Glacial retreat and melting: Several of the world’s tallest mountain peaks, including Mount Everest, are found in Nepal. Melting glaciers in these mountainous areas is a major worry since it can lead to increased flooding, landslides, and the loss of freshwater resources.
  • Climate change is harming Nepal’s water resources, with changes in precipitation patterns leading to less predictable water supplies. Melting glaciers and snow in the highlands also changes river flows, which can impact populations downstream.
  • Nepal is a biodiversity hotspot, and climate change is threatening the country’s diverse and distinct ecosystems. Temperature and precipitation patterns impact the range and distribution of plant and animal species. The loss of habitat due to glacial retreat and other consequences leads to decreased biodiversity.

Government and Climate Change in Nepal

On World Meteorological Day, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Water Resources, and Irrigation has continuously made a statement to raise public awareness of climate change. The remark emphasizes that the ocean covers 71% of the world, which tremendously impacts weather and climate.

The DHM also noted that rising global temperatures had impacted the climate cycle. The melting of snow in the mountains and the resulting increase in ocean water levels have significantly impacted worldwide weather patterns. Extreme weather phenomena such as heatwaves, droughts, torrential rains, cold waves, and lightning have caused significant damage and loss of life in Nepal, as in many other countries. According to the statement, reducing the loss caused by such catastrophes has become a substantial problem.

The theme of World Meteorological Day 2023, “The Future of Weather, Climate, and Water Across Generations,” is essential to Nepal. Nepal is extremely sensitive to the effects of climate change, with a large population dependent on agriculture and natural resources for a living. Changes in weather patterns and the availability of water resources can significantly impact Nepali people’s lives and livelihoods.

Climate Change on Meteorological Day

You might be wondering why to talk about Meteorology Day; here are some points to reason for them:

Increasing public awareness: World Meteorological Day is an ideal opportunity to improve the general knowledge of meteorology and weather forecasting’s relevance. It helps educate the public about the function of meteorologists and weather forecasters in protecting lives and property from extreme weather events.

Highlighting the significance of science and technology: Meteorology is a scientific area that collects and analyzes meteorological data using advanced technology and procedures. World Meteorological Day raises awareness of the relevance of science and technology in tackling global issues such as climate change and extreme weather events.

Encourage international cooperation: The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an international organization that promotes teamwork and collaboration among meteorological organizations worldwide. World Meteorological Day is a chance to encourage worldwide cooperation in addressing global meteorological concerns.

Meteorology plays an essential role in promoting sustainable development by providing information and forecasts that help decrease extreme weather occurrences’ effects on human societies and the natural environment. World Meteorological Day encourages using meteorological data and forecasts to aid in advancing sustainable development.
