What is the Red Lane?

We have observed that several segments of the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur road have been given a red paint job. So what does this red lane signify? Its primary purpose is to designate a dedicated lane for express buses operating along the Ratnapark-Suryabinayak route.

The Vision

The primary goal behind establishing this red lane is to enhance the efficiency and reliability of public transportation in the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur road. By having a separate lane for express buses, it can help reduce congestion and improve the flow of traffic. This will ultimately make the commute faster and more convenient for both commuters and the express bus service.

Operating the Red Lane

As per statements from authorities at the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) and the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office (KVTPO), only specific buses will have permission to use the red lane. The Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs Association has decided on the selection of these buses.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has requested the Department of Transport Management to allocate a total of 25 buses for the express service. The buses will run twice daily during peak hours. These are from 9 am to 11 am and from 4 pm to 6 pm. There will be a departure from Suryabinayak to Ratna Park, and another from Ratna Park to Suryabinayak. These buses should depart every five minutes within the two-hour morning and evening time slots.

In accordance with the department’s guidelines, these buses will be accessible for pick-up and drop-off at 19 designated locations. These locations include Ratnapark, Bhadrakali, Maitighar, Babarmahal, New Baneshwor, Shantinagar, Tinkune, Koteshwor, Jadibuti, Lokanthali, Kaushaltar, Gathaghar, and Chardobato, among others.

Rules to Follow

To ensure a smooth and efficient transportation system, it is of utmost importance to follow the specific regulations governing the use of the red lanes. These red-colored lanes have a specific purpose. They are solely intended for the use of express buses, and no other vehicles are allowed to occupy them during their operational hours.

One distinctive advantage granted to express buses is their exemption from stopping at traffic lights or intersections. This means that they can maintain a continuous flow along their designated route. This will reduce travel time and ensuring prompt service for commuters.

Moreover, the rules do not permit these express buses to linger for extended periods at designated bus stops. This policy helps maintain the efficiency of the system and ensures that buses stay on schedule.

To further facilitate the smooth flow of traffic along the red lanes, traffic police will play an active role in helping buses navigate congested intersections. Their assistance is integral to maintaining order.

In order to enforce these rules rigorously and maintain the integrity of the red lanes, penalties will be imposed for any violations or unauthorized use of the lanes. Too add to this, strict enforcement is necessary to ensure that the express bus system operates effectively and serves its purpose of providing efficient and reliable public transportation.

In conclusion, this initiative aims to provide a dedicated and efficient public transportation option. We hope that this will contribute to more sustainable and accessible urban mobility in the Kathmandu-Bhaktapur area.
