One major cause that leads to postpartum depression is hormonal changes. During the first two to thirty-five days following delivery, commonly known as the “baby blues,” new mothers struggle with insomnia, irritability, and depressive feelings. Fathers can feel quite irritable and frustrated.

Other symptoms of postpartum depression include mood swings, with the majority of the time experiencing feelings of depression, guilt, and shame. Other signs of postpartum depression include feeling exhausted, fluctuating weight, having little to no motivation to complete everyday tasks, having problems bonding with their newborns, and having an inclination to harm themselves or them.

Challenges Faced

Every new beginning is challenging. The parents have a lot more duty now that they have a newborn. To make ends meet, they must collaborate. It’s not as simple as society portrays it to be. A lot of couples find it difficult to acclimate to this new setting since the elders don’t provide enough attention or encouragement.

After such a significant upheaval in their life, it is nearly impossible to return to their former ways. The parents will raise a person in addition to a child. This is by no means an easy task. In order for the child to develop into a responsible, morally-driven adult with a future, they must practice good parenting. For the parents, the process means a great deal of strain and responsibility. Postpartum depression negatively impacts both the parents and the kid when it interferes with parenting.

Other family members need to provide the necessary support and assistance while the couples adjust to their new life. Asking for help can be difficult, but parents must be able to do so if they feel they need it.

There is still a lack of information on postpartum depression in Nepal, which prevents many new parents from understanding what they are going through. Additionally, because of their elevated stress levels, they find themselves in an unpleasant scenario where they are unable to bond with their newborn or carry out any regular chores.
