UEFA Euro 2024

The UEFA Euro 2024, the 17th edition of the UEFA European Championship, runs from June 14 to July 14, 2024. Germany hosts this prestigious event for the third time on its soil. It is the first major tournament Germany has hosted solely since the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the first to feature matches in what was once East Germany, with Leipzig as one of the host cities.

Tournament Structure

It includes 24 teams, with Germany qualifying as the host nation automatically. The other 23 teams secured their places through a qualifying process that involved the winners and runners-up of 10 qualifying groups and additional spots determined by play-offs. These play-off spots were awarded to the best-performing teams in the 2022-23 UEFA Nations League that did not qualify directly.

Historic Debuts and Records

Georgia makes its debut in the European Championship in this tournament, bringing a new dynamic to the competition. In Spain’s opener against Croatia, forward Lamine Yamal set a record as the youngest player to compete in a UEFA European Championship match at 16 years and 338 days old. Albanian midfielder Nedim Bajrami also made history by scoring the fastest goal in European Championship history, netting against Italy in just 23 seconds. Portugal’s Pepe became the oldest player to participate in the tournament by starting against the Czech Republic.

Defending Champions and Qualified Teams

Italy, the defending champions, entered the tournament after their penalty shootout victory over England in the 2020 final. Among the 24 teams that qualified, 19 participated in the previous edition, including top teams like France, England, and Croatia. Portugal qualified with an impeccable record, and France, England, Belgium, Hungary, and Romania also qualified without a loss.

Albania and Romania took part after missing Euro 2020, while Serbia and Slovenia came back since Euro 2000. Serbia qualifies as an independent nation for the first time, and Slovenia makes its fourth appearance as an independent nation. Georgia’s qualification, its first since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, ensures that every final tournament since Euro 1960 has featured at least one new team making its debut.

Host Cities and Venues

Euro 2024 matches are being played across several German cities, highlighting the country’s rich football culture. This includes Berlin, Munich, and Leipzig, among others.
