The Story of Bhatbhateni Supermarket

Today, Bhatbhateni supermarket is a household name for all go-to products available. The products sold at Bhatbhateni supermarket range from small made-in-Nepal tea to international chocolates under one roof. The name it has earned over the years in Nepal is extraordinary. Chairman Min Bahadur Gurung’s journey from a small store to 24 chain stores countrywide within 30 years is an eye-catching story. Today, let’s look at the story of Bhatbhateni supermarket.

The Beginning

Min Bahadur Gurung, a former bank employee, seeks his wife’s job after their marriage. However, they are having problems finding a suitable career for her. As a result, they decided to take the lead on the situation themselves. They opened a tiny Bhat Bhateni Cold Store in Kathmandu’s Naxal neighbourhood. Unfortunately, the business went through a fire in 2047.
Nonetheless, they kept getting critical knowledge of the store’s operations and profits. This encouraged them to reopen the store. In 2050, they made a massive investment of NRS 6 million to open the first Bhat Bhateni supermarket, which spans 3,000 square feet. Initially, there were just ten employees, but daily sales approached 50,000.

The Expansion

By 2060, the company had grown into a large facility with 200 people. Subsequently, Bhat Bhateni opened its first branch in Maharajgunj, with 400 employees.
This was followed by three stores in Koteshwor-Kathmandu, Chuchepati-Bouddha, and Krishna Galli-Pulchowk in 2067. BS, Pokhara Store in 2068, Anamnagar, Balaju, and Kalanki stores in 2070, Chitwan and Dharan stores in 2072, and Butwal Store in 2073 set the current benchmark for the business, with over 4,500 combined staff assisting customers in selecting from 200,000 products across a 10,00,000 sq.

There are currently 24 Bhat Bhateni supermarkets around the country, including in Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kaski, Sunsari, Chitwan, Rupandehi, Morang, Banke, Makwanpur, Kailai, and Parsa districts.

The Era

Mr. Min B. Gurung has done more than most individuals can aspire for in their lifetime, yet he is just starting. An ambitious development strategy will see the opening of several new stores in Kathmandu and around Nepal in the following years and a large warehousing unit in Baluwatar. The story of BhatBhateni supermarket has only just begun.
