Six Basic Traffic Signs

Are you prepared to drive with confidence? Whether you’re a seasoned driver or a beginner behind the wheel, understanding basic traffic signs in Nepal is essential for safe and efficient analysis. So, let’s dive in and explore the road signs that every driver should know about.

1 Road Works Ahead

The Road Works Ahead sign alerts the driver first, so we should position it well before reaching the work site. In urban areas, it should be around 30 meters away, and on rural roads, approximately 60 meters ahead. On high-speed national highways, we need to place it 200 meters from the work site.

It’s crucial to place the sign where it’s visible from a distance. For instance, if the road bends just before the works, we should position the sign before the bend. This sign features a black symbol on a white background, all within a red triangle.

2 No Entry

This sign indicates that cars are not allowed to access the road ahead. This ban applies to all types of vehicles, including carts, cycle rickshaws, and bicycles.

To ensure optimal effectiveness, we must strategically place the signs to ensure that vehicles can easily identify an alternative route. It is essential to position the sign on both sides of a one-way road at the junction where entry is prohibited. Additionally, we must prioritize visibility by prominently displaying the signs and, if necessary, angling them to directly face oncoming traffic. This facilitates swift understanding and determination of the restrictions.

3 No Pedestrians

This sign serves to denote zones where pedestrians are prohibited, typically utilized in urban settings. An example scenario would involve a national highway traversing a densely populated area, where pedestrian and vehicular traffic conflict.

To ensure pedestrian safety and compliance, we should strategically position signs to facilitate the utilization of alternative pedestrian routes. So we must conspicuously display the sign, preferably on the left-hand side of the road, marking the beginning of the pedestrian restriction.

4 No Parking

This sign indicates areas where parking is strictly prohibited at all times. The restriction applies exclusively to the side of the road where the sign is located. Its use is justified in areas encountering notable parking challenges, such as narrow, bustling streets or locations near major junctions.

To ensure clarity and compliance, the sign should be prominently displayed on the applicable side of the road. It’s essential to replicate the sign at each major junction and intervals of 200 meters between junctions, ensuring an understanding of coverage and dedication to the parking restriction regulations.

5 No Stopping

This sign designates zones where stopping or waiting, including the loading or unloading of passengers or goods, is strictly prohibited. It finds application in urban areas where it is imperative to prevent vehicles from halting, particularly on narrow, bustling streets or busy urban paths where slowing would cause traffic jams.

To ensure optimal effectiveness and compliance, we should prominently display the sign on both sides of the road at the beginning of the restriction.Furthermore, we need to repeat it after junctions and at intervals of every 400 meters between junctions, ensuring clear distinction and adherence to the stipulated restrictions.

6 Temporary Stop

As we approach an intersection and encounter a red octagonal sign with white letters spelling “STOP,” what should we do? That’s right – we must come to a complete stop behind the white line or crosswalk. It serves as a temporary stop sign and remains valid until the work is completed. After directing any pedestrians or vehicles with the right of way, we can proceed carefully if the intersection is clear.

In the End

To drive safely and carefully, we need to understand the basics of traffic signs. When we know and follow these signs, we keep ourselves and others safe on the road. So, let’s stay alert, follow traffic signals, and make every journey safe and enjoyable.
