Shift in Politics- A New Coalition

The Nepali Congress and Maoist Center’s ruling partnership has broken down. According to a CPN-Maoist Center party senior, the partnership between the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), led by Mr. Prachanda has ended as the two main leaders’ mounting disagreements have reached a breaking point. With PM Prachanda forming a new coalition and reorganizing the cabinet, Nepal experiences a dramatic shift in politics.

Breakdown of the Previous Coalition

Long-standing mistrust has long existed between the Maoist Center and the ruling Congress. In spite of their poor performance in the government, Prime Minister Dahal was voicing his dissatisfaction with certain senior Congress leaders who claimed that Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba was not assisting him in his attempt to replace certain ministers.

The prime minister declared that he would take over for the minister who fell short of expectations in his speech to the country during the final week of December of last year.

The New Coalition

Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal teamed up with the CPN-UML after severing his alliance with the Nepali Congress, the biggest party in the House of Representatives.

The CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Janata Samajbadi Party are members of this new coalition. Three new ministers were appointed from among these involved parties during the reshuffle. Three new ministers were sworn in on Monday by President Ramchanda Paudel under the oath of office and secrecy.

The newly appointed cabinet ministers

Sworn in as ministers without portfolio were Hit Bahadur Tamang of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Padam Giri of the CPN-UML, and DP Aryal of the Rastriya Swatantra Party.

After switching coalition partners, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal made the decision to appoint new ministers to the Cabinet.

Bottom Line

The formation of this new coalition is a huge shift in politics. Even while it represents a new beginning, the reorganization of the cabinet raises both expectations and uncertainties. What do you think about this new coalition? Do let us know your opinion on this matter.
