Kirtipur City

Have you ever wondered what it feels like to visit a place where history is alive in ancient temples and every corner tells a story of strength? Kirtipur is a city that mixes its rich past with the lively Newari culture. Located just 5 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu, this old city offers an unforgettable experience for those who explore beyond the usual tourist spots.

A Journey Through Time

Kirtipur’s history dates back to 1099 A.D., making it one of Nepal’s oldest cities. It has witnessed everything—from the prosperous era of the Newars to the harsh invasion by the Gorkhali King Prithvi Narayan Shah in the 18th century. The Battle of Kirtipur in 1767 shows the city’s strong spirit. After several failed attempts, Prithvi Narayan Shah finally captured the city through trickery. In a brutal show of power, he ordered that the noses of all residents over 13 years old be cut off, a cruel act meant to break their spirit. Despite this, the resilience of Kirtipur’s people remains legendary.

Cultural and Architectural Wonders

As we walk through the backstreets of Kirtipur, we’ll discover beautiful ancient temples that serve as guardians of the city’s rich history. Each temple, with its detailed carvings and peaceful atmosphere, encourages us to stop and reflect. The Newar culture, preserved for centuries, provides an authentic experience that is both captivating and enlightening.

The city’s name itself is derived from the Sanskrit terms “Kirti” (glory) and “pur” (city), reflecting its historical grandeur. The colloquial name “Kipoo” is equally endearing, echoing through the local dialects and daily conversations.

Despite its ancient roots, Kirtipur is far from a relic of the past. It has become a vibrant municipality, part of the UNESCO tentative list since 2008. The town’s vehicle-free zones create a peaceful environment ideal for leisurely walks. Morning and evening strolls reveal breathtaking views of the valley and offer glimpses into daily Newari life, from bustling markets to quiet residential lanes.
