Kathmandu Outdoor: A Renowned Brand

Have you ever wondered about the story behind the globally recognized Kathmandu Outdoor brand? Did you know that despite its name, Kathmandu is not a Nepali brand but one inspired by the vibrant capital city of Nepal? Let’s delve into the fascinating journey of Kathmandu, a brand that has become synonymous with quality outdoor and travel gear.

A Name Inspired by Nepal

Following the sale of their ALP Sports Clothing company, John Pawson and Jan Cameron established Kathmandu in New Zealand in 1987. The brand’s name pays homage to Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, known for its rich culture and as a gateway for trekkers and adventurers. This inspiration is reflective of the brand’s mission to equip adventurers and travelers with reliable gear for their journeys.

Early Days

Kathmandu started its journey by setting up retail outlets in Australia, including major cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Canberra. The initial clothing range was predominantly manufactured in New Zealand. Bernard Wicht, a key figure from the ALP Sports days, played a crucial role by continuing to manufacture for Kathmandu and later became a third shareholder when Kathmandu re-entered the New Zealand market in 1992 by purchasing Alps Sports from its receivers.

Kathmandu’s expansion drew major investment, and in 2006, Quadrant Private Equity purchased the company for NZ$275 million. It is now marked as a new beginning for Kathmandu Outdoor. The company went public in November 2009, listing on the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges. This move not only increased its capital but also solidified its presence in the outdoor retail market.

Kathmandu has consistently emphasized sustainability and eco-friendly practices. In February 2019, the brand launched a series with National Geographic called “Eco Traveller,” hosted by Nick Saxon. This series focuses on eco-friendly travel and sustainable tourism, aligning with Kathmandu’s ethos of protecting and preserving the natural environment.

A Legacy of Adventure and Sustainability

Kathmandu’s evolution from a modest New Zealand company to a renowned global outdoor and lifestyle brand showcases its dedication to quality, sustainability, and innovation. Although the brand’s name reflects the essence of Nepal’s capital, its products motivate adventurers and travelers around the globe. Now operating as KMD Brands, the company upholds its legacy while seizing new opportunities for growth and sustainability in the outdoor and sports industries.

So, the next time you gear up for an adventure, remember Kathmandu’s rich history and enduring spirit, a brand that equips you to explore the world sustainably and stylishly.
