Bijaya Dashami: The Tenth Day

Today is Bijaya Dashami, the tenth day of the Dashain festival. It is considered as the most significant day of all. It is the occasion when elders perform a special ritual by applying tika, a mixture of vermillion, curd, and rice, on the foreheads of their younger family members.

The Rituals

This special day involves the preparation of a mixture known as “tika,” which combines rice, yogurt, and vermilion. In this ceremony, the Jamara, which is initially sown during Ghatasthapana, is also placed on the heads of those receiving the tika. Following the tika application, elders offer blessings and provide small monetary gifts known as Dakshina to the younger generation.

This tika ceremony begins from Dashami, the tenth day and extends for five more days. It lasts until the full moon day. During this time, family members continue to share the blessings and essence of the festival. This reinforces the bonds of love and respect within the community.

Religious Significance

Dashain has both religious and historical significance. It commemorates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Dashain also holds historical importance as it marks the establishment of a unified Nepal under King Prithvi Narayan Shah. Thus, it represents unity and the preservation of the Nepali culture and traditions.

Timing for Dashain Tika

Annually, the auspicious timing for receiving the Vijaya Dashami tika, a pivotal ritual of the Dashain festival, is calculated by the Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti. This committee is composed of skilled astrologers and revered priests who collaborate to determine this sacred time.

This year, the Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti has declared the auspicious time to receive the Dashain tika as Tuesday at precisely 11:02 AM on October 24. This precise calculation reflects the deep-rooted belief in the importance of aligning with astrological and traditional principles during this significant festival.

President to Apply Tika

President Ramchandra Paudel will extend the Dashain tika to both distinguished individuals and the general public as part of the Bijaya Dashami festival celebrations. The Office of the President at Sheetal Niwas has allocated specific time slots for those who wish to receive the tika from the head of state on Tuesday.

As per Office Spokesperson Shailaja Regmi Bhattarai, the President’s tika ceremony is scheduled to take place between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. Individuals interested in partaking in this tradition are kindly advised to enter the Office through gate number 1.

Bottom Line

We trust that you will relish the tika ceremony and fully embrace the Dashain festivities with your loved ones. Our warmest wishes go out to all of you for a joyful Dashain. Please take care of your well-being and enjoy the celebrations!
