Basantapur: Must-Visit Attractions From Temples to Museums


One of Kathmandu’s most famous places to visit is Basantapur, also known as Basantapur Durbar Square. It is located in the heart of Kathmandu and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Malla rulers reigned over the Kathmandu Valley from the 12th to the 18th centuries, and their royal residence was located in Basantapur Durbar Square. There are so many places to visit in Basantapur, like Hanuman Dhoka Museum, Kaal Bhairav Museum, Kumari Ghar, and many more.

Hanuman Dhoka Museum

The museum’s name, Hanuman Dhoka Museum, derives from Lord Hanuman’s name. It is among Kathmandu’s best-known museums. The palace is rich in both visual and intangible cultural riches, and it also has extraordinary historical, archaeological, and religious value. It was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Every Nepalese king has made a contribution to the museum through modifications, repairs, or renovations. The museum is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Furthermore, it is one of the major tourist attractions in Basantapur

Kaal Bhairav Temple

One of the most well-known temples in Kathmandu is the Kaal Bhairav Temple. It is a 12-foot-tall idol of Lord Shiva’s dangerous form, Kaal Bhairav. During the Malla era, artisans carved a 12-foot-tall idol from a single stone. It is located in the southwestern part of Basantapur. People from all around the world come to worship him. The god is also said to represent Lord Shiva in a fit of fury, wanting to get revenge on Lord Brahma for his arrogance.

Kumari is the living goddess of Nepal; according to Hinduism, Kumari is the reincarnation of the goddess Telaju. According to Bhudisht, she is the reincarnation of the goddess Vajradevi. Kumari is a virgin girl who comes from a Sakhya family. Kumari Ghar is also known as Kumari Bahal.

Basantapur Durbar Square boasts numerous additional locations, such as restaurants, cafés, and old bookstores. Basantapur is a place where you can explore so many things, and it is full of cultural heritage.
